The Sansa Fuze is the latest addition to the range of mp3 players from SanDisk, the purpose of the Fuze is to incorporate the very best qualities brought to us by SanDisk in the Sansa View and Sansa Clip.  The Fuze really is the all round portable multimedia device and as well as playing audio files (mp3s) it has the capability to play video files (mp4s) and to display images, other features include a fully integrated digital FM radio and a microphone voice recorder.

The Sandisk Sansa Fuze is a very good addition to the Sansa range and has progressed very well from previous models. The main positives are the impressive sound quality, the very solid and good looking design, with a huge improvement in the responsiveness of the user interface and the radio feature. Their are three Sansa Fuze mp3 players to choose from and they have memory capabilities of 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB.

Fuze Design

The Sansa Fuze benefits from a sleek modern looking design which consists of a rubber back, that as well as contributing to the look of the Fuze it also offers fantastic protection for the mp3 player, guarding against general wear and tear and unsightly scratches, this also acts as a non-slip feature when the Fuze is laid on a flat surface.  The front display of the Sansa Fuze is plastic and is scratch resistant; however, it is still advisable to not place the player face down on hard surfaces.  Although the Fuze is more hardy and resistant to scratches and other cosmetic damage, for the cost of them, it is well worth investing in a case or skin for that added protection.

The navigation is controlled by a wheel, as were the early Sansa models, however, the design of the latest wheel on the Fuze is by far the best looking.  The wheel’s rotation is very smooth and the menu is very easy to navigate,

The construction of the Sansa Fuze has certainly improved over the years and this offering is no different, in fact when considering the very low price of the Fuze, the design and construction is unbelievable compared to many other more expensive mp3 players.

The Screen/Display

The screen of the Sansa Fuze is easily large enough for the features that are offered with a 1.9 inch display, in direct sunlight there can be a slight shimmer, however, this can be almost completely combated by increasing the brightness of the display.  The screen has a good resistance to scratches when it is compared to other leading mp3 players on the market.  The contrast of the text to the background is almost prefect in terms of readability and there is also a number of colours to choose from for the background.

The Battery

The life of the battery is quoted at 24 hours audio playback by Sansa, however, realistically you can expect between 20 and 24 hours, which is still very good in this market.  Video playback is quoted at 5 hours but again in reality this is more likely to be around 4 hours.

The User Interface

The responsiveness of the user interface on the Sansa Fuze has been really improved upon compared to previous models, which makes the Fuze much easier to use.  The actual UI has not changed too much from previous Sansa models, the simplicity of use means that even first time Sansa users will pick up the set up of the interface very quickly

Media Transfer

Unfortunately SanDisk only give support to Microsoft Windows, however, one of the major positives of the Sansa Fuze is that it can be used with any operating system.  This means that you can make use of subscription music services such as Napster, Rhapsody and I-tunes, although I believe that the easiest way to transfer your media is to make use of desktop media players and would highly recommend Windows Media Player for all of you transfer needs.

Audio

The music menu on the Sansa Fuze is set out much like the menu you would find on an ipod and other leading mp3 players.  The menu has all of the options that you would expect such as artist, album, song and genre etc.  You can also rate your songs on a 1 to 5 star basis and then make use of the top rated option so you can get to your favourites with ease, as well as this feature you can also view the most recently added tracks where you will find all of you newest tracks.

When you access the album menu you have the option to show the album cover and title, which has a slightly longer loading time than the just title option, this option is really only there for visual affect but is a nice feature to have.

If you are a fan of creating your own play lists then there is an option to make a couple of them directly on the Sansa Fuze interface, however, if you like to make a large number of play lists then it is much easier to create them using your desktop media player and then synchronising them onto your mp3 player.

There is a section under the music menu entitled Audiobooks, in order to put your audiobooks into this file on the mp3 player you can just place them into the fuze directory, into the audiobook file.  Alternatively if you tag the genre of the file as ‘audiobook’ then they will be placed into the correct file.

Unfortunately there is no bookmark option on any of the Sansa players, however, the Sansa Fuze does have a last played memory feature, so when you turn your player off while listening to your audiobook then when turning it back on, you will be given an option to continue where you left off.

Podcasts work in exactly the same way and can be saved by tagging the genre as ‘podcasts’

Sound Quality - As with the previous Sansa models in the mp3 player series, the sound quality on the Fuze is excellent, however, the standard earphones that you will receive in your package do the job perfectly well but to realise the full quality it would be worth investing in a slightly better pair, but this would not be much of an expense.
